Posted: Updated:

A mysterious death is being investigated at Eastern Michigan University.  Police say a young woman with ties to our area was found dead last night, and her death appears to be suspicious.

The death of Julia Niswender is being investigated as a murder.  Niswender, who was 23, graduated from Monroe High School in 2008. She was currently attending classes at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti.

13abc spoke with Niswender in 2009. She was attending a vigil for a for a soldier from Monroe who was killed in Afghanistan.

Niswender is a communications major at Eastern and was expected to graduate next year.

Last night around 9:30, investigators discovered Niswender's body in her apartment on the 1-thousand block of Huron River Drive. Police said the cause of death has not yet been determined but they are treating it as an apparent homicide. EMU sent out an alert this morning and also has this statement on its website.

"The Ypsilanti Police Department has just informed us that the off-campus death of the female student reported overnight is being investigated as an apparent homicide. The cause of death has not been determined. No information on a possible suspect has been determined."

Police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
