Ohio school districts getting new ratings

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

Kids get letter grades in school but soon Ohio schools will be graded on the same system.  The plan passed the Ohio House late Thursday after passing the Senate the day before.  Toledo Public School officials are not looking forward to the change.

"Once the legislature puts closure on it we just have to move forward," said TPS superintendent Dr. Jerome Pecko.

Those are Dr. Pecko's thoughts after the legislature decided to implement a new system of A through F grading on districts, replacing the old titles like excellent or academic watch.

"For those of us that are urban centers for public education it's going to be more challenging because we have other issues we are attempting to deal with as well," said Dr. Pecko.

Dr. Pecko is already preparing for the changes that include a college and career aspect, along with a new common core.

"It's a different way to approach teaching, probably the most radical departure from what we have done year after year throughout my career that I've seen," said Dr. Pecko.

That includes narrowing the quantity of topics covered, while really digging into the topics. Dr. Pecko says now is the time to start moving on the changes expected to happen in the 2014-2015 school years.

"Just making all of our staff knowledgeable of the changes and looking for ways that we can bring to the table the kind of information they need to better prepare us for success," said Dr. Pecko.

Next up is Governor Kasich's signature and he is expected to sign it.
