Local school has plan to keep kids safe

Gunshots in a classroom are a terrifying thought for parents and students.

Oregon Schools have implemented a training program to protect teachers and students if a gunman enters the building. It's called ALICE and stands for alert, lockdown, inform, counter and evacuate.

Three years ago teachers in the Oregon District were trained on how to protect students and survive if a gunman entered the building.

Teacher Marcia Punsalan said, "I hope we never have a situation where we have to put this into practice, but I think if it would ever come to that, I will be more prepared."

The ALICE concept gives teacher and students additional tools to stay safe. Teachers spent hours in the classroom and got hands-on training as part of the new safety procedures.

Punsalan now keeps the food and emergency supplies recommended by the program including: a class list, gloves, cups, toilet paper, writing paper, sheets and rope. These everyday items could become tools for survival in a crisis.
