From War zones to the classroom

Posted: Updated:

Saturday is graduation day at the University of Toledo for students in the Master of Business Administration program, and one of them has an inspirational story.

Army Captain Trent Miller has flown combat helicopters in some of the most dangerous war zones in the world. He went from tours of duty in both Iraq and Afghanistan to a classroom at UT. He grew up in the small Putnam County town of Columbus Grove and his story should make you proud to be an American.

Captain Miller flew a variety of missions in the war zones including time as a medevac chase pilot, "The support aircraft hovers and provides cover as needed and usually helps as additional eyes for the crews. Sometimes we have to get closer to shield and protect."

In the last year and a half Captain Miller has become a father and a graduate student, "It's a very big adjustment not only school, but moving back from Germany to Northwest Ohio."

Captain Miller says the lessons he's learned in the Army have translated well in the classroom and his Northwest Ohio roots have served him well as he serves his country, "Small town values like playing with kids next door, walking to school, coming home for lunch, working in the store my family owns and all the wholesome lessons I learned in a two stop light town make a big difference in how you treat people."

Captain Miller's wife Denise is excited to see him follow in her footsteps tomorrow, "We are now a dual master's family. You beat him to it? I did several years ago!"

Captain Miller will continue his graduate studies next year, but he expects to one day be deployed again, "I took the oath to support my country and I am proud to do it. I get a chance to do what is right for my country."

As we mentioned, after graduation it's back to the classroom for Captain Miller. He and his family leave for Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas in January where he'll attend the Army's Graduate School at the Command and General Staff College. Sometime next year Captain Miller will be promoted to Major.
