Wind will power new Pettisville School

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

Car loads of people came to watch the near completion of a seven year project today at Pettisville Schools. 85 foot blades were attached to the tower of a wind turbine this morning. In a few weeks this turbine will be fully operational, generating enough energy to power the entire school and eliminate a $75,000 yearly electric bill.

Aaron Goodwin, founder of the Renaissance Group said, "days where the wind is producing really good it will spin the meter backwards the school will get credit for the electricity and days like today when it isn't blowing and they need more power they draw it back off. So it is almost like thinking of the grid as a battery." The wind turbine is just the icing on the cake for school's green energy project. Dr. Steve Switzer, Pettisville superintendent said, "it is a geothermal building, we've got day lighting for heating of water. It is a number of things that we think are both good ideas and good stewardship and good teaching opportunities."

The cost savings are just some of the benefits. Goodwin said, "sure savings is really important for districts especially in states such as Ohio where we are having such a hard time financially but the educational opportunities too, because these kids will be the ones that inherit what we leave them."

If a tornado threatens, get into the basement. If you don't have a basement, a small, interior room in the lowest floor of your home is relatively safe. Avoid rooms with windows. Mobile homes are not safe in a tornado.
