Local emergency trainers talk about disaster prep

Posted: Updated:

Faculty at the Owens Community College Center for Emergency Preparedness were shocked and saddened to hear the news of a shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

The facility and its leaders take pride in the training they provide for students and emergency workers.  Many local police, fire and EMT academies train at the OCC site.  Trainees face everything from severe car accidents, massive fires, hazmat situations, and live shooting scenes.  Faculty members say this basic training will help them face a real-life emergency.

Michele Johnson, Dean at the School of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness says her goal is never to overwhelm or scare students, but to teach them how to stay calm and trust their instincts in a chaotic situation.  She called Friday's shooting a tragedy, but says hopefully some good can come out of it.  She hopes the shooting can show other crews how to handle themselves in similar situations.
