With heavy hearts, a large group of people from our area came together Saturday night at the Toledo Children's Memorial to honor the lives of those lost at Sandy Hook Elementary.

A vigil was held Sunday in Monroe, Michigan to remember the Connecticut shooting victims.

The funeral director at Allore Funeral Home wanted to bring the community together. Days before the massacre in Connecticut, the Monroe community had a tragedy of its own.

A 23-year-old Eastern Michigan student was found dead in her apartment.

An emotional service was held inside the Allore Chapel-Martenson Family of funeral homes in Monroe. A speaker recalled how their community came together when a young girl, Nevaeh, went missing and was later found dead.

He said he hopes those in Newtown will be able to comfort and support each other as well.

After the service, 27 doves were released in front of the funeral home, to symbolize the 27 souls lost in Connecticut on Friday.

Tim lee attended the service. His daughter knew Julia Niswender. Police are investigating the Eastern Michigan student's death as a homicide. She was found dead in her apartment on Tuesday.

"Two things like this that happened, with my daughter going to school with the young lady that was killed up in Eastern Michigan, and then this, make me really want to go home and hug my kids. Even though they're grown now, they're still my children," Lee says.

"People need to take back their neighborhoods. And taking back your neighborhoods means you n...
