Flu virus strikes early in Michigan

Posted: Updated:

Doctors warned this could be a record year for the flu.

In Michigan, the number of people coming down with the virus is growing.

The Detroit Free Press reports 63 cases of the flu have been reported, that's nearly doubled from the previous week. A majority of those are in Southeastern part of the state.

The Michigan Department of Community Health says it's concerning to see so many cases this early on in the season.

Winter doesn't officially start until Friday and many doctors offices and pharmacies are still giving out flu shots. The peak for flu season is typically January and February.

One school in the Upper Peninsula even closed for three days this week due to a flu outbreak.

It could be tough strain, the CDC says hospital stays linked to the flu are up from last year and five children have died due to flu like symptoms.
