Professor says 0% chance of world ending

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

As the end of the world hype reaches a peak, Astronomer and director of the Ritter Planetarium Michael Cushing says there isn't anything to worry about. "Their long count calendar ends on December 21st. But just like everybody else's calendar it starts again the next day. So just like our calendar ends on December 31st, we don't think the world is going to end every December 31st. It just so happens that their calendar is 5,000 years long."

As the calendar flips a page, many people are flocking to learn more about a society that once thrived. Cushing says, "I can guarantee that the world will not end on December 21st. There is zero chance of that. But given the interest people have in those sort of things, we thought this could be a great program for people to come and learn about the real Mayan history"

Assuming the world doesn't come to an end, Cushing will be directing "Tales of the Maya skies this Friday at the Ritter Planetarium. It will explain the Mayan myths and the strong connection between the night sky and the Mayan culture. The presentation is at 7:30 PM on Friday and costs $7 for adults, $5 for children, and 4 and under are free.
