Local school leaders unsure of state's plan for safety

P.J. Kapfhammer has served on the Oregon school board for a year.  He's all for school safety, but not the latest plan to come out of Columbus.

Attorney General Mike DeWine and state education leaders announced a new safety expansion plan on Wednesday.  It includes state police training for teachers and recruits mental health workers to the task force.  DeWine supports access to guns for trained school workers, but says that decision is up to each district's school board.

"The state of Ohio needs to start making decisions and leading the way and saying this is how we're going to do it and we're going to fund it and make everybody safer," says Kapfhammer.

"It's passing the buck, it's not fair to put it on local small government."

Bob Vasquez with the TPS board sides with DeWine's approach.  He says letting each district create its own plan will benefit the students.

"We know our schools, we know our buildings, we know our communities," says Vasquez. "And I like the districts having to be responsible for their safety plans."

Both leaders agree finding the funding for any type of new safety initiative is one of the greatest challenges.  With so many cuts coming from the top down, they say money moving the same direction would help.

"If they are going to make certain criteria mandated, then they need to provide the money," says the TPS leader.

"We want to do more. We just need the funding to do it," says Kapfhammer.
