Holiday travelers get ready for Mother Nature

Posted: Updated:

The weather outside is frightful, even though it isn't significant snow.  Drivers are taking notices, making sure to be extra safe when heading out during the holidays.

Susan Knable doesn't have to drive far to visit family this year, but she plans to be at work which means a lot of time behind the wheel.

"I'm just going to be more careful, try and give myself a little more time," Knable said.

Robert Jurcago is heading back home to Cleveland, an area expected to be hit by the snow.

"No, I'm not surprised," he told 13abc.  "It is about time we get the snow and I'm sure a lot of pep ole have been waiting for it to hit anyway."

This year AAA estimates more than 93 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles for the holidays.  December 21st is expected to be the busiest.  It's the same day our region is experiencing its first bout of winter weather.

"We know that there is that hazard as those people forget how to drive in winter weather, we want to be prepared for that,"ODOT spokesperson, Theresa Pollick said.

The Ohio Department of Transportation is always ready for the ice and snow.  While crews are out making sure the roads are as safe as possible, they want to make sure drivers remember to take it slow.
