Chemical release at North Toledo business

Posted: Updated:

It was a little after 11:30 Friday morning when firefighters got the call; 10,000 pounds of resin burst from a mixing kettle at Arclin Inc. on the city's northside.  As bad as it sounded, no one was injured, and local waterways stayed clean.  But the chemical release did leave residue on cars, parking lots and nearby buildings.

"There was a safety mechanism involved and that operated the way it was supposed to," says Lt. Matt Hertzfeld with the Toledo Fire Department.

At least ten employees were evacuated to a nearby Tarta bus, while crews worked to secure and clean the area.  Investigators confirm phenol and formaldehyde made up the resin, but say it did not become a public threat.

Investigators believe Friday's cold and dry weather helped keep chemicals contained.  Even with hours of clean-up time, they believe the spill could have been worse.

"Fortunately no one was exposed here. All employees were safely evacuated from the plant and are being evaluated by Toledo Fire and Paramedics."

Midwest Environmental will continue the clean up process.  Phenol does have a strong odor, but EPA workers conducted air monitoring tests, and did not find any dangerous levels of contamination in the air.
