Survey: food allergies cost parents $4000 a year

The cost of a food allergy for the average American child is more than $4000 a year according to a survey from Northwestern University.

Most of that cost does not come from direct medical care, but from parents who caring for the allergic child.

Researches say parents sometimes have to change jobs or take part-time work in order to provide proper care and that can cost an average of $2400 a year.

Many parents surveyed said they'd quit jobs or been fired in connection with their child's allergy.

The survey estimated the total annual economic cost to the United States from children's food allergies was $25 billion.
