NASA: Earth dodges asteroid threat

Posted: Updated:

NASA says an asteroid that could have collided with the Earth no longer poses a threat.

There was a one percent chance that the asteroid known as 2011 AG5 could smack into the planet in February of 2040. But NASA has calculated the asteroid's future course and now believes the mass will miss us by more than half-a-million miles.

If an asteroid of that size were to hit Earth, it would release the same amount of energy as several thousand atomic bombs.
