Winter storm has drivers traveling early

Posted: Updated:

When the winter weather hits, some people, like Tammy Spencer, prefer to hunker down.

"I usually stay home!"

She and her family are heading to Virginia for the holiday, but they're trying to stay ahead of the storm.

"That's the whole idea, hurry up and get there before the snow gets here," she said.

Wednesday, Northwest Ohio is set to get hit pretty good with snow.  It's the first significant winter weather of the season, but it can also be a headache when you're out and about.

"We'll certainly pay attention to that, it can make for hazardous conditions for people driving," Sgt. Shaun Robinson with the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

The Ohio Department of Transportation already has a jump on the storm.  Crews have pretreated the highways with brine.

Still, the ice and snow will be an issue for drivers, especially during the first major snowfall.

"Slow down, pay attention and know where you're going," Sgt. Robinson said.  "If you're in an area where you're not familiar with, know where you're going and plan accordingly."

Common sense advice that could make the difference.
