Turnpike drivers deal with winter weather

Posted: Updated:

David Walker is driving to Connecticut, which is normally an easy trip.  But on Wednesday, Mother Nature caused a few set backs.

"We haven't been able to get above 55mph and that's okay," he said.  "We'll get there."

Snow, wind and cold made for some treacherous driving conditions.  Just as Pat Maher.  He's trying to get home to Scranton, Pennsylvania after spending the holidays in Chicago.

"Its a 12 hour driver without the weather," he told 13abc.  "I figure it will be at least 14 hours."

Ohio Department of Transportation is doing everything it can to keep the roads clear.  Signs are posted along the Turnpike, warning drivers about the weather.  Plow trucks made several rounds, salting and clearing the snow.

"The guys are doing a pretty good job of maintenance," Walker said.

While some people find it inconvenient, others live for this type of weather.  One Fremont family is taking full advantage of it and using their winter toys in the snow.

"We love it," Jon Horn said.  "Just out having a little fun playing in the snow, we don't get to often."

And whether you love it or hate it, it's hard to escape winter in Northwest Ohio.
