Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan snow totals

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

Here are the snowfall reports from our first significant winter storm of the season. Thanks to everyone who helped us out. We got several reports for some locations and they are listed below as a range.

1)   Lima 9.5"

2)    Bellevue 8-10"

3)    Upper Sandusky 8"

4)    Port Clinton 5-8"

5)    Fremont 6-8"

6)    Tiffin 6.5"

7)    Findlay 6"

8)    Woodville 6"

9)    Norwalk 5"

10)  Sandusky 5"

11)  Monroeville 5"

12)  Monroe 4"

13)  Adrian 4"

14)  Bowling Green 4"

15)  Paulding 3.5"

16)  Toledo 2.8"-4"

17)  Hillsdale 2.8"

18)  Fayette 2.5"

19)  Defiance 2"

20)  Napoleon 2-2.5"

The snow was a powdery snow meaning it didn't have a lot of moisture. One of the lower snow totals in the area occurred at the Toledo Express airport with 2.8". The moisture content in that snow was only 0.14". That is a 20 to 1 snow ratio meaning that for every 1" of liquid precipitation 20" of snow would fall. To break that down even more, a 5" snowfall during yesterday's storm only had 1/4" of an inch of precipitation. The average snowfall ratio for northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan is 13 to 1 but it varies significantly from storm to storm.

The snowstorm played out as forecasted in terms of snow amounts and winds across most of the area but there were some exceptions. Snow totals in Paulding, Defiance and right down US 24 into the Toledo Metro area were a couple inches below normal due to a dry pocket that formed in the late morning hours. This storm also had a quicker than expected energy transfer to the east coast. Lima picked up a couple more inches than expected due to a slow moving heavy snow band that moved in during the late morning hours.
