FORT WAYNE, IND. - Max Campbell collected Toledo's first three goal game of the season leading Toledo to a 5-2 win in Fort Wayne tonight. Toledo has a record of 17-12-0-1 and is 8-7-0-1 on the road this season.
Toledo would out shoot the Komets 13-5 in the first period but neither team could get anything on the scoreboard. Kyle Rogers led Toledo with 3 shots on goal and a couple of big hits in the period.
"These division games are so important," said Head Coach Nick Vitucci. "I loved our energy and how we controlled the play in the first two periods to build a four goal lead. This was a total team effort tonight."
It would the Walleye would collect the game's first goal as Kyle Rogers scored his 4th goal of the season at 4:52. Willie Coetzee set up the captain with a perfect goal mouth pass. Rogers would make it 2-0 at 8:14 of the period when he took a Joey Martin pass and wristed a shot past Komets goaltender Ken Reiter. The Walleye outshot Fort Wayne 19-9 in the second period.
The Walleye power play would get on the board at 13:11 of the period when Max Campbell would shove a rebound into the back of the net for his 9th goal of the season. Campbell would do it again on the power play at 17:59 of period when he deflected a Willie Coetzee shot past Reiter for his second goal of the game (Ben Youds also assisting). The Komets would get a late power play goal of their own, but Toledo led 4-1 after 40 minutes.
The Komets would get the first goal of the third period just two minutes in to trim the Toledo lead to 4-2. Max Campbell would get a steal inside the Fort Wayne and wristed a shot past Reiter for his third goal of the game.
Walleye Notes: Goaltender Kent Simpson made 24 saves and is 7-7-0-1 on the season. Toledo had gone four straight games without a power play goal, but finished tonight 2-3 with the man-advantage.
