Lake Erie starting to freeze up

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

The first ice formations are developing on Lake Erie. The average lake temperature dropped to 32 degrees for the first time this year on Thursday.

The first ice formations are developing between Toledo and Port Clinton and will likely expand in the days and weeks to come.

The average peak in ice thickness across Lake Erie isn't until late January to early February. However, the ice concentration can vary significantly from year to year.

In 2001 for example the section between Toledo and Port Clinton was completely covered in ice. The following year, less than 1/10 of the surface area between Toledo and Port Clinton was covered in ice during the peak of winter.
