Principal dies from injuries after head-on crash

Posted: Updated:

A longtime high school basketball coach and recent elementary school principal has died in a car crash. Now the Pike-Delta-York School District is preparing its staff and students for an emotional return to school next week.

The crash happened during the snowstorm after Christmas. It was a head-on collision along Airport Highway between Delta and Swanton. The crash sent Delta Elementary School principal Cory Sprow and his two young daughters to the hospital.

The superintendent tells us Sprow's daughters have since been released, but after seven days in the hospital, Principal Sprow did not survive.

Sprow, who was 38, became the principal this year after teaching for more than a decade at the middle school and coaching the high school basketball team.

The superintendent is currently in the process of notifying parents. Pike-Delta-York is still on break.

The staff of the entire district came in Friday to speak with counselors and a crisis intervention team.

Counselors and psychologists will return Monday when the 1,300 students return to class.

At this point, the superintendent does not plan to have an assembly, but teachers will talk to their students in each class.

The class schedule remains the same, and an interim principal is in place.

The flags at Pike-Delta-York are at half-staff because, as the superintendent puts it, for many of those in the community, Principal Sprow was a hero.
