2013 may be the year of bright comets

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

2013 could be the year of the comet. 2 comets are expected to make an appearance in the night sky this year. The first comet called 2014 L4 (PanSTARRS), will be visible in March and April of this year. As that comet comes and goes, the anticipation will be sky high for a comet that could be brighter than the full moon. Comet Ison is just a chuck of rock and ice deep in space at this time. The comet will be getting closer to the sun and by late summer the first sightings are expected using a home telescope. In October the comet's tail will begin to form. Viewing will get more interesting by Thanksgiving as the comet will be visible to the unaided eye after sundown in the same direction as the setting sun. There could be a point in December when the comet is brighter than the full moon and you would need special viewing equipment to safely view the rare highlight in the night sky.
