Baby girl born after mother killed in crash dies

Posted: Updated:

The baby born after her mother was killed in a car accident on Thursday has died.

Baby Melissa Mckenna Kominek passed away early Sunday morning, the family confirmed in a release.

24-year-old Dustin Kominek and his 26-year-old pregnant wife Rachel Lockery Kominek were headed East on US 20 when a gust of wind blew their car into the path of an oncoming vehicle.  Dustin survived the crash, but Rachel did not.

Life Flight air ambulance workers were able to deliver Rachel's baby girl, who was immediately taken by Life Flight to Mercy St. Vincent's Medical Center where the infant was listed in critical condition.

In a statement, the Kominek and Lockery families thanked the medical personnel at the scene as well as the staff of St. Luke's ER and Mercy St. Vincent's NICU.

They also expressed gratitude for the continuing thoughts and prayers from the community.
