Oregon family dog found decapitated in backyard

Posted: Updated:

It's a disturbing case out of Oregon. Police say a dog was mutilated and found in a backyard in Oregon. Now they need the public's help tracking down whoever is responsible.

The dog was found at a home on Mambrino and Fink. Police describe it as an extreme case of animal cruelty.

"Who in their right mind would do that to an animal?" asks neighbor Peggy Rasar.

News of the decapitated dog is sending shockwaves through the Oregon neighborhood.

At the end of December, police say the owners let their 20-pound terrier Khloe outside, but when they tried to let her back in, she was gone.

The homeowners searched the neighborhood but couldn't find their pup. A day later police say the family made a gruesome discovery.

"When they went in the backyard, they found the backside of the dog but not the rest of the dog," says Oregon Police Lieutenant Hank Everitt.

It's still unclear what happened, but police say it appears someone intentionally cut the dog in half.

Peggy Ransar lives down the street and has a dog named Rugrat. She can't imagine someone killing the dog she considers part of the family.

"I feel sorry for those people, to lose a loved one like that," she says.

Police say the people living at the home aren't saying much about the case. We stopped by and tried to talk with them, but no one answered, just two dogs came to the window.

Despite the gruesome crime, police say there is no need to sound the alarm. Neighborhood dogs are safe they say.

"I would say it's targeted directly at this family," says Lt. Everitt. "There's no history."

If you have any information about the case, you are asked to call Oregon Police.
