Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Lourdes will return home to Tam-o-Shanter for the first time since Nov. 28 on Wednesday evening as the Gray Wolves host Northwestern Ohio in a battle of teams tied in the WHAC standings. On Saturday, Lourdes will wrap up the first half of conference play, traveling to Grand Rapids, Mich. to face Cornerstone.
On the Air: Wednesday's contest against Northwestern Ohio will be broadcast live locally on BCSN, which is part of Buckeye Cablesystem. The game is also scheduled to re-air on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 8 a.m. as well as 2:30 p.m.
Head Coach Zareth Gray: In her second season on the Lourdes bench, Zareth Gray has a 10-37 (.213) record at the helm of the Gray Wolves. In her sixth season overall as a women's head coach, Gray has a 40-132 (.233) career mark. She is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Northwestern Ohio won both of the previous two meetings between the two schools, with each contest taking place last season. The Racers defeated Lourdes 83-48 at Tam-o-Shanter on Jan. 18 before downing the Gray Wolves 88-68 in Lima, Ohio on Feb. 18. Cornerstone is also 2-0 all-time against Lourdes, winning 82-59 in Grand Rapids, Mich. on Dec. 10, 2011 and 72-64 at Tam-o-Shanter on Feb. 1, 2012.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes went 2-1 last week upon returning from the Christmas holiday. The Gray Wolves started the week on Sunday with a 68-60 victory at NCAA Division II member Slippery Rock. Lauren Tilden led five players in double figures with 14 points. On Wednesday the Gray Wolves returned to WHAC play, falling 72-37 at Siena Heights. Ty Ali paced Lourdes with 15 points. On Saturday Lourdes picked up a conference victory at Marygrove, downing the Mustangs 63-57 behind 16 points from Tarynn Hampton.
Scouting Northwestern Ohio: The Racers have dropped three straight games following a 79-76 loss at home to Indiana Tech on Saturday. Shaye Warman leads Northwestern Ohio averaging 12.8 points per game while Madison Coldren adds 11.5 points and a team-leading 7.6 rebounds per contest.
Scouting Cornerstone: The Golden Eagles had their five-game winning streak snapped on Saturday with a 44-43 loss to Concordia (Mich.). Cornerstone heads to Indiana Tech on Wednesday before hosting Lourdes. Robyn Veltkamp leads ranks 16th nationally averaging 17.9 points per game. As a team Cornerstone is tops in NAIA Division II allowing opponents to shoot just 32.1% from the floor.
Matching Last Year's Win Total: Just 17 games into a 30-game schedule, Lourdes has already matched its win total from all of 2011-2012, the program's inaugural season. The Gray Wolves won their fifth game of the season on Saturday at Marygrove, and now have two conference victories this year after going winless in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play one season ago.
A Tight Conference Race: As the midway point of the WHAC schedule is reached, the league standings are bunched together. The top eight teams in the 12-team conference will earn spots in the conference tournament. Currently Lourdes is one game back of the final qualifying spot at 2-7, but is just three games out of fifth place as well.
Doubling Up the Numbers: Tarynn Hampton and Tiffany Scott both recorded double-doubles over the last week for the Gray Wolves. Hampton registered her fifth double-double of the year with 16 points and 13 rebounds in the victory at Marygrove on Saturday. The previous Sunday Scott recorded her first double-double at Lourdes with 13 points and 13 boards in the win at Slippery Rock.
From Downtown: Lauren Tilden ranks 40th in the country making 2.2 three-pointers per game, helping the Gray Wolves to a 41st ranking nationally as a team. Lourdes is connecting on 5.6 triples per night. Tilden is 32nd overall individually making 37 triples on the year while as a team the Gray Wolves have drained 95 shots from beyond the arc, ranking 34th in the country.
Captains Named: Lourdes has four captains on the roster this season. Serving in the leadership role for 2012-2013 are Lauren Tilden, Ty Ali, Tiffani Blackman, and Tarynn Hampton.
Lourdes Tabbed Ninth in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in ninth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. Lourdes was picked just ahead of Michigan-Dearborn, and just behind Indiana Tech. Concordia (Mich.) was tabbed as the conference's preseason favorite for 2012-2013.
Hampton Named to All-WHAC Preseason Team: Junior forward Tarynn Hampton has been named to the All-Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference Preseason Team in a vote of the league's head coaches. A member of the WHAC All-Newcomer Team one season ago, Hampton led Lourdes averaging 15.8 points and 9.0 rebounds per contest. She shot 43.1% from the floor while averaging more than 31 minutes per contest.
This and That: Tiffani Blackman grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds against Marygrove ... Tiffany Scott has a career-high seven assists against the Mustangs ... Lourdes has had a positive assist-to-turnover ratio in each of its last two wins ... Tarynn Hampton is shooting a team-leading 45.9% from the floor ... after playing just twice at Tam-o-Shanter all season, Lourdes will play three of its next four on its home court.
