Nursing students head to Nicaragua

Posted: Updated:

Students from the Toledo college of nursing will be heading to Nicaragua in March to deliver much needed medical supplies, medications and food.

Denise Oancea is the professor coordinating the trip. She tells 13 ABC, "We conduct research while we are there...we set up portable mini clinics...The Department of Health Ministry schedules where were going to go each day...and people will just give us their home to turn into a clinic for the day."

Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the western hemisphere and is plagued with inaccessible care, poverty, and malnutrition. The majority of the health issues are related to the publics lack of health education and accessibility.

Oancea tells 13 ABC, "The government does provide College for them but it is very competitive, so they are very educated which is why the doing patient education is a big part of our mission...they just don't have jobs because there economy is so poor."

More than a dozen students, doctors, and volunteers are going on this trip but they need your help raising $5,000 to cover the food, medical supplies and medications.

Stephanie Blanchard is a nursing student who is excited about the trip. She urges the community to be generous. "Any little bit helps...$1.50 does a lot for medication, so we encourage any little bit.' Brittany Stanton agrees. She tells 13 ABC, "What we are asking is for people to help us in the quest to help others...we are going to serve and we need the help."
