United North moves forward with plans for St. Hedwig school

Posted: Updated:

2013 is a big year for United North.  Renovations are underway at the historic Ohio Theatre, several buildings have been refurbished, and the next big project is the St. Hedwig school building.

"That school has been vacant for about 6 years," Terry Glazer, the CEO of United North, said.  "When we did our quality of life plan the need for senior housing came up."

Her's the plan: turn the building into a senior housing development, in the heart of the Polish Village.  It will have 41 rooms and be open to seniors all across Toledo.  On Wednesday, the Zoning and Planning Commission gave United North the green light to move forward.

"That is an excellent use of that property," city councilman, Mike Craig said.

United North has done projects like this before.  Just off of Suder, you'll find Crane's Landing.  It used to be the old Chase school, but now its a 40 room senior housing development.  Leasing begins next month.

"Already, we're getting a big demand," Glazer said.  "We have 10 families ready to lease that space."

Glazer says these projects are funded through low income housing tax credits.  He says it's a competitive process in Ohio, but one he's had success with.

"We're optimistic that we can get this funded just like our other projects," he said.

The goal is not only provide affordable housing for seniors but also continue to improve the neighborhood they love.

St. Hedwig's church will stay where it is, in the state its in.  City Council will discuss that matter at their January 22nd meeting.  If everything goes as planned, construction will begin in 2014.
