The Toledo Zoo announced its newest addition today: a baby gibbon.  The animal was born at the zoo on November 27th to mother Hue and father Batu.  The zoo has not yet determined the baby's gender as it is allowing the mother and baby to bond without any human interaction.

Baby gibbons are born with cream colored fur that darkens as they mature. Male gibbons stay a dark color their whole lives but female gibbons will turn back to a cream color when they are fully grown.

The gibbon is critically endangered and faces extinction as the species' population numbers continue to decline.  The Toledo Zoo works with other zoos nationwide in a Species Survival Plan to help maintain and ensure a future for many endangered species.
