There's more going around than just the flu

Posted: Updated:

Believe it or not... the flu isn't the only virus going around. Doctors say they're seeing lots of patients with strep throat and respiratory problems.

You can find hand sanitizer in just about every doctors office. This couple says they keep it all over the house. They have a new baby named Blake. He's six days old. The doctor gave the couple a few tips on keeping Blake healthy.

"Every time you touch something other than the baby you need to wash your hands before you go back to him and just try to keep him away from people who are sick with the flu or colds stuff like that," said Paul Dupler.

Pediatrician Dr. Colleen Olson says there's more than just the flu going around. She says she's seen a lot of RSV which stands for respiratory syncytial virus.

"Its very common childhood illness it starts as a common cold soar throat runny nose stuffy nose and especially in infants really under six months of age it can really affect their lungs and cause wheezing," said Pediatrician Dr. Colleen Olson.

So when should you take your child to the doctor? Dr. Olson says if they've had a fever for three or four days, breathing problems, vomiting, if they're not drinking, or using the bathroom

"It is sometimes it's really hard to tell I will say coming in is much safer than waiting it out. It could be strep throat which we've been seeing some of it could be an ear infection pneumonia bronchitis sometimes they have this cough and you wouldn't think it would be pneumonia but you have to listen to diagnosis that," said Dr. Olson.

Dr. Olson says she's also seeing a lot more kids with pneumonia and bronchitis.  She says vaccines aren't 100 percent protective, but she says they're better than nothing. That's why she's encouraging everyone to get a flu shot.

"Did you guys get flu shots? We haven't yet but we were told today we need to get our flu shots," said Lauren Littleton.
