Oregon schools moves closer to May levy request

Posted: Updated:

The Oregon City School Board is talking about putting a levy on the May ballot.  On Thursday, school leaders took the first steps to make that happen.

"We feel like we sort of restructured and are in a good place now," Dr. Mike Zalar, Oregon Superintendent said.

It would be a 2 mill, 5 year permanent improvement levy renewal.  In the past its raked in $1.74 million a year.  This time it may a little less because of declining property values.  But district leaders say the funds could actually help save money in the long run.

"If we can put this money into investing in savings its a smart thing," Board President PJ Kapfhammer said.  "Our day to day costs will be lowered because we've invested things this way."

The district has already upgraded windows and heating and electrical systems in some of the buildings.  Now leaders are focused on safety.

"We have almost all of the key stuff here, but its dated and we want to improve it," Kapfhammer said.

Nothing is officially on the ballot just yet.  The board will likely vote on it at their January 22nd meeting.
