ARMING TEACHERS

(AP) - A rural Ohio school district plans to arm a handful of its non-teaching employees with handguns this year - perhaps even janitors. Officials say four employees in the Montpelier schools have agreed to take a weapons training course and carry their own guns inside the district's one building.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING CRACKDOWN

(AP) - Governor John Kasich says he'll back further legislation this session bolstering the state's legal crackdown on human trafficking. Kasich spoke at an awareness event today at the Statehouse. The Republican governor said the state is marshaling its resources against the crime, but more can be done.

RESTRUCTURING TREASURER'S OFFICE

(AP) - Republican State Treasurer Josh Mandel is restructuring his leadership team at the Ohio treasury and cutting 10 percent of the staff, in a move he says will trim his upcoming budget. Mandel says the biennial payroll budget at the Treasurer's Office has fallen from $12 million under predecessor Kevin Boyce to $10.4 million, part of $2.6 million saved in his first two years.

MICHIGAN FLU DEATHS

AP) - Michigan health officials have confirmed 338 flu cases at state-run labs as the virus continues to send children and adults to hospitals, doctor offices and urgent care centers. Department of Community Health spokeswoman Angela Minicuci tells The Associated Press Friday that the number of pediatric deaths remains at four. She says there have been adult deaths, but those aren't required to be reported to the state.

HOSTESS SALE

(AP) - Hostess says it's selling most of its bread business to Flowers Foods for $390 million. The sale also includes 20 bakeries and 38 depots. Brands included in the sale are Wonder, Nature's Pride, Butternut, Home Pride, Merita and Beefsteak bread. Flowers Foods is based in Thomasville, Ga.

ELLIS ISLAND ARTIFACTS

(AP) - More than 1 million historical artifacts and documents from the Ellis Island Immigration Museum have been moved to storage facilities while damage to the island from Superstorm Sandy is repaired. The museum sits on an island next to the Statue of Liberty in the center of New York Harbor. It's closed due to severe damage to its infrastructure. The statue also is closed.

GAMING AND GUNS

(AP) - The gaming industry is the latest group to meet with Vice President Joe Biden to discuss legislative remedies to gun violence. The industry says violent crime, particularly among the young, has fallen since the early 1990s while video games have increased in popularity. Gun safety activists seem to be aligning behind expanded background checks for gun buyers.

SCHOOL SHOOTER ARRESTED

(AP) - A California teen has been booked on two counts of attempted murder and one count of assault with a deadly weapon for yesterday's shooting at a rural high school. A classmate says the teen had a "disturbing smile" when he opened fire. A science teacher and a staffer talked him into putting down the shotgun used.
