Cars broken into, scratched, tires slashed

Posted: Updated:

South Toledo neighbors are not happy after a rash of car break-ins that left their vehicles damaged.

Cars parked along two South Toledo streets were targeted early Saturday morning. Neighbors living on Decatur Street and Southmoor Drive woke up to a number of cars with slashed tires and keyed paint jobs. Nearly a dozen vehicles were vandalized.

Mary Berning's Jeep was broken into. "Not happy at all. I just think it's crazy. What are you supposed to do?"

Mary was getting ready to head off to work when she noticed someone had broken into her Jeep. Mary says the thieves took off with her cigarettes. They also damaged her fiance's cars. The tire on his SUV was slashed and his pickup truck was scratched.

Residents on Southmoor are also planning on keeping an eye out. Ryan Shepard said, "My Ma's boyfriend has a green Jeep and it got the tire punctured. The neighbor's daughter had their car slashed."

The vandalism is the latest string of car-related crimes reported to police. In recent weeks, dozens of car break-ins were reported in West Toledo. On Tuesday, someone broke the passenger side window of a car on Central Avenue in the Westgate Shopping Center. A police report says nearly $1800 worth of electronics were stolen.

If you have any information about these crimes, call Crime Stoppers at 419-255-1111
