BLOOMINGTON, IND.– The Bowling Green State University tennis team began the spring season on Friday (Jan. 11), competing in day-one action at the adidas/IU Winter Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. The three-day, four-team event, hosted by Indiana University, is being held at the IU Tennis Center.
The Falcons primarily competed against players from host Indiana on Friday. The Hoosiers, ranked 49th in the nation in the latest ITA team rankings, captured seven of eight singles matches against the Brown and Orange.
Senior Katie Grubb picked up BGSU's lone win, downing the Hoosiers' Ariel Beckerman in a seventh-flight match. Grubb lost only three total games in her 6-1, 6-2 win.
Each of the seven other Falcons, however, lost to an IU player in singles action. Freshman Katie Brozovich battled the Hoosiers' Carolyn Chupa to a third-set tiebreaker, but the IU sophomore pulled out a 10-6 victory in the 'breaker.
While players are competing in several rounds of non-bracketed singles play this weekend, doubles teams are competing in a standard bracket. All four BG teams fell on Friday, including two against IU foes.
The BGSU duo of Grubb and fellow senior Maddy Eccleston lost a narrow 9-8 decision to the Hoosiers' Alecia Kauss and Shannon Murdy, while juniors Emily Reuland and Nikki Chiricosta fell by an 8-4 count against IU's Jithmie Jayawickrema and Gabrielle Rubenstein.
Senior Jade Johnson and freshman Drew Fillis competed against Marquette's Aleeza Kanner and Ana Pimienta, dropping an 8-3 decision, while Brozovich and senior Mary Hill lost by an identical 8-3 score to MU's Erin Gebes and Rocio Diaz.
In addition to BGSU, IU and Marquette, No. 52 Missouri rounds out the four-team field in Bloomington.
Saturday's (Jan. 12) action begins at 10:00 a.m., with two rounds of doubles play and one round of singles matches scheduled. The invite concludes on Sunday (Jan. 13), with the final rounds of doubles. Sunday's action also is scheduled to get underway at 10:00 a.m.
