Secor development close

Posted: Updated:

A very visible piece of vacant property in Toledo may soon be developed.

Expect new businesses to pop up along Secor Road that could create dozens, if not hundreds, of jobs.

The 10-acre site along Secor at the intersection of Executive Parkway used to be a movie theatre multi-plex.   For the last 5-years, it's been vacant.  Now, a developer is talking to the city about building on this site.

Deputy Mayor Steve Herwatt isn't saying much about the project, telling 13abc reporter Bill Hormann, "We think it's very important to redevelop that site.  We've had numerous meetings with the owners but I don't want to go into specific details."

Actually, the city met with the owner Tuesday morning about his plan.

13 a-b-c has learned two 5-story hotels are planned for this site.

The plot of land sits in councilman Tom Waniewski's (R) fifth district.  He hopes the plan becomes reality.  "It will mean construction jobs.  it'll mean permanent jobs after that.  so, I'm very excited about it."

Construction of the first of two hotels could begin in March.  The owner of the property operates several successful hotels and shopping centers around town.

But the city will have to do its part to get the project off the ground.  That requires spending 350-thousand dollars to extend Executive Parkway across Secor into this site."

That money will have to come from the capital improvement budget, but that's what the money's for.

Council president Joe McNamara (D) says "Paving roads and moving infrastructure pipes is something we do all the time and if it revitalizes that site around Secor Road and leads to jobs, that's a good thing."

The developer believes the hotels will attract medical office businesses,  retail shops, maybe even restaurants and a gym, making this an attractive bet for Toledo city council.

Councilman George Sarantou insists, "This is good news because it's an empty site with enormous potential."

And after 5years sitting vacant, that potential may soon be realized.

There's a lot of traffic along Secor so the traffic pattern may have to change to accommodate new businesses along that road.
