Upcoming in Gray Wolves Basketball: Round two of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play opens up this week for Lourdes University. The Gray Wolves open the week entertaining Lawrence Tech on Wednesday evening before hosting nationally-ranked Davenport on Saturday night. The Gray Wolves will play seven of their last 11 games at home over the next month of the season.
Head Coach Andre Smith: In his third season both on the Lourdes bench and overall as a men's collegiate head coach, Andre Smith has a 41-40 (.506) record. He is the only head coach in Lourdes program's history.
Series Notes: Lourdes is 2-0 all-time against Lawrence Tech with both victories coming earlier this season. The Gray Wolves posted a 65-32 victory over the Blue Devils on Nov. 3 in the consolation game of the Trent Allen Tournament held in Spring Arbor, Mich. Lourdes then defeated Lawrence Tech 53-47 on Nov. 17 in Southfield, Mich. Wednesday will mark the Blue Devils first trip to Tam-o-Shanter. Davenport is 4-0 all-time against the Gray Wolves, with three of the victories coming in Grand Rapids, Mich. Earlier this year the Panthers defeated Lourdes 76-57 on Dec. 1 at Davenport. In the Panthers' lone previous trip to Tam-o-Shanter, Davenport downed Lourdes 67-59 on Jan. 4, 2012.
This Year's Previous Meetings: Alex Davis led Lourdes with 13 points and the Gray Wolves forced 21 Lawrence Tech turnovers as Lourdes defeated Lawrence Tech 65-32 on Nov. 3 in the consolation game of the Trent Allen Tournament hosted by Spring Arbor. Corey Harvey came off of the bench to drain five three-pointers on his way to a game-high 21 points as the Gray Wolves defeated the Blue Devils 53-47 at Lawrence Tech on Nov. 17 in the WHAC opener for both schools. Harvey again led Lourdes in the first meeting at ninth-ranked Davenport on Dec. 1, scoring 19 points, but the Panther shot 57.1% from the floor in the second half on the way to a 76-57 win over the Gray Wolves.
Wrapping Up Last Week: Lourdes ran its winning streak to five straight games on Wednesday with a 58-47 victory at home over Northwestern Ohio. Elvin Butler tallied 13 points and Ron Dukes added 11 for the Gray Wolves in the win. Saturday Cornerstone snapped Lourdes winning streak, downing the Gray Wolves 61-50 in Grand Rapids, Mich. Alex Davis led Lourdes with 14 points.
Scouting Lawrence Tech: The Blue Devils have dropped four straight games following a 64-53 loss against Concordia (Mich.) on Saturday afternoon. Anthony Sisson leads Lawrence Tech averaging 10.3 points per game while the Blue Devils as a team are scoring just 48.7 points per night. Jon Osantowski is pulling down a team-leading 4.9 rebounds per game for the Blue Devils.
Scouting Davenport: The Panthers snapped a two-game losing skid on Saturday afternoon with a 70-52 victory over #18 Indiana Tech. JaVontae Ford leads the way for Davenport averaging 15.2 points and 5.9 rebounds per game while Dominez Burnett adds 13.7 points per night. As a team the Panthers are averaging 76.4 points per contest.
Nation's Top Defensive Team: Lourdes defense ranks tops among all NAIA Division II schools allowing just 51.6 points per game this season. The Gray Wolves have only allowed four opponents all season to score 60 against them in a contest.
Contesting Shots: Lourdes also ranks first in NAIA Division II in opponents' field goal percentage. The Gray Wolves are limiting the opposition to just 36.4% shooting from the floor this season. Only six teams have shot better than 40% in a game against Lourdes this year.
Facing Another Ranked Foe: Davenport, which entered the week ranked eighth in the country, will mark the fourth ranked foe the Gray Wolves will have faced this season and 15th in the three-year existence of the men's basketball program. Lourdes is 4-10 all-time against ranked opponents, including a win earlier this season against #20 Indiana Tech.
Streaking to Five: Lourdes had its second five-game winning streak of the season snapped last Saturday at Cornerstone. Both times the Gray Wolves were one win shy of the school record six-game winning streak set last season from Jan. 7-25, 2012.
Lourdes Tabbed Fifth in Preseason Poll: The Gray Wolves were selected to finish in fifth place in the WHAC this season in the preseason poll conducted of the league's head coaches. Lourdes was picked just ahead of Aquinas, and just behind Madonna. Davenport was tabbed as the conference's preseason favorite for 2012-2013.
Harvey Named to All-WHAC Preseason Team: Senior forward Corey Harvey has been named to the All-Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference Preseason Team in a vote of the league's head coaches. A member of the WHAC All-Newcomer Team one season ago, Harvey averaged 12.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest. He shot 41.7% from the floor while averaging more than 28 minutes per contest.
Captains Named: Lourdes has two captains on the roster this season. Serving in the leadership role for 2012-2013 are Corey Harvey and Remy Fleurima.
This and That: Jake DuPree handed out seven assists without a turnover on Saturday at Cornerstone ... the Gray Wolves shot 92.3% from the free throw line against Northwestern Ohio ... Corey Harvey, Alex Davis, and Elvin Butler are the only three players to lead Lourdes in scoring this season ... Lourdes 14th in the country with a +7.6 rebounding margin this season ... DuPree is 17th in NAIA Division II with a 2.6 assist-to-turnover ratio.
