Findlay schools make safety a priority

Posted: Updated:
FINDLAY, Ohio -

While schools around the nation are still reacting to the mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, Findlay Schools Superintendent Dean Wittwer says Findlay's plan to upgrade school security has been in the works for more than a year.

"We've had these on the books since last summer, but we now see a now a need to start this project quicker."

Jefferson, Wittier and North View Primary Schools will all see security upgrades. There will be only one entry that is closely monitored.

Permanent improvement dollars are being used to pay for the new security systems. But even with dozens of high tech cameras in place, Wittier says the system won't work unless everyone follows the safety protocols.

"You have to be vigilant as a staff to make sure your security entrances work but making sure people are asking people and know who's in your buildings."

All of Findlay's elementary schools would have their security upgraded by summer.
