Job market shows positive signs in Northwest Ohio

Posted: Updated:

Workforce Development Manager Michael Veh has seen more hiring in Northwest Ohio.  Fields like healthcare, computer technology and particularly the trucking industry are on the hunt for workers.

"It's really getting to be a good mix of jobs coming through the door," says Veh.  "A lot of businesses have been kind of holding their breath, seeing what's going to happen. I think you're going to see them opening their doors and expanding their operations a little bit."

About a 100 people attended a job fair at the Source on Friday morning.  The fair targeted transportation and warehousing jobs, two fields needing more people to fill positions.

"People are moving products. If people are moving products that means people are making products and people are buying products. So it's a good indication that the economy is on the upswing."

The local automotive industry is also getting stronger.  Veh has seen a stream of hiring at the Jeep plant.

"For a long time we had a lot of low-paying, entry level jobs. But we're starting to see more in the range of middle income: $14, $15, $16 an hour jobs."

There's still some uneasiness over the national economy, and the Ohio jobless rate still sits a little over 6.5 percent.  But Veh says the downward unemployment trend is a sign that things are moving forward in the Northwest Ohio region.

"Giving up isn't an option. You need to keep pounding the pavement, <and> talking to people. Get your name out there, talk to as many people as you can and let them know you're looking for work."
