St. Paul's offers shelter from cold for homeless

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

As the temperatures drop, the lines at St. Paul's Winter Crisis Shelter will only get longer. For the past two weeks, volunteers have been lining up cots each night and handing out pillows and blankets. A nightly meal is also prepared and served.

Samuel Fooks, who is homeless, appreciates the help. "The best thing is that they have a shower. Stay warm, get cleaned up and be ready for the next day." Fooks is just one of many receiving help.

The Winter Crisis Program is in its third year and Director Leslie Eppler says they are preparing for a larger crowd in the coming week, when the chilly weather is expected to set in.

The outreach service is aimed at helping the homeless, but also open for anyone in need. Eppler says people who've lost utility service and can't stay in their homes are also welcome at the shelter.

The supply room is stocked with outerwear, clothes and plenty of bedding. The temporary nightly shelter runs through February 17. Leaders are hoping to extend it, but they need help.

The group say they always welcome food and clothing donations, but right now they could use cash to help keep the shelter open until March.
