Coldest & driest weather in 2 years

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

Temperatures reached their coldest point since February 10, 2011 Wednesday morning. A morning low of 0 degrees was recorded at the Toledo Express airport. The Executive airport recorded a low temperature of 1 degree. The marine layer (a pocket of warm air near Lake Erie) kept Monroe to Port Clinton a little warmer with lows from about 7 to 12 degrees. Findlay and Lima, Ohio dropped down to 5 degrees. Defiance recorded a low of 4 degrees. The coldest locations other than Toledo were in lower Michigan with a low of 0 degrees in Hillsdale and -2 Adrian.

Not only was the air extremely cold but it was also very dry. The dewpoint is a measure of how much moisture is in the air. The higher the number the more moist it becomes. The dewpoint fell to -5 degrees overnight which is some of the driest weather that has been reported dating back to January of 2011. The air was so cold and dry that a cup of boiling hot water thrown up into the air would immediately evaporate. The 200 degree plus water is already near evaporation and when it is launched up into the dry air, the water jumps right to evaporation instead of falling to the ground as water droplets and freezing.
