UT PRESS RELEASE:

Women's Track/Cross Country Coach Kevin Hadsell Resigns

TOLEDO, OH –University of Toledo director of women's track & field and men's and women's cross country Kevin Hadsell announced his resignation today following his admission he had violated University policy.

"We have accepted the resignation of Coach Hadsell," said UT Athletic Director Mike O'Brien. "We thank him for his many contributions to the success of our cross country and track programs, and wish him well in his future endeavors."

O'Brien said that no NCAA rules violations were involved in Hadsell's decision to resign. He added that assistant coach Jiana Jin has been named interim head coach for the track and cross country programs, and that interim assistant coach Ari Fisher will remain in her position.

Said Hadsell, "I want to apologize to the University, the Toledo community and the student-athletes, past and present, for letting them down. I have always told my student-athletes that there are rules, and that they must follow the rules or face the consequences. I hold myself to the same standards; it would be hypocritical not to. Therefore, I have submitted my resignation today as the director of women's track & field and men's and women's cross country.

"The University of Toledo and the community of Toledo have been my home for the last 15 years. I am indebted to the University of Toledo for everything it has done for me. I will always be a Rocket."

Hadsell enjoyed tremendous success during his tenure at UT. His women's cross country squads won five Mid-American Conference championships, including in each of the past three seasons. He also was named MAC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year five times, in 2001, 2002, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Following stints as an assistant coach at Coastal Carolina (1993-97) and Columbia (1997-98), Hadsell was hired at UT in 1998 as the head coach for men's and women's cross country, and assistant coach in women's track & field. He took over as the director of the entire track and cross country program in 2003.

Before long, he built the Rockets' women's cross country team into a regional power, and also brought the women's track program into competition for a MAC title. Hadsell's women's cross country teams won league titles in 2001 and 2002, and again in 2010, 2011 and 2012 (prior to his arrival, UT's women's cross country team had finished in last place in the MAC in 13 out of the previous 18 seasons). In addition, the Rockets qualified for the NCAA Championship Meet in each of the past three seasons. The women's track & field squad finished in second place in both the 2012 indoor and outdoor MAC Championship Meets, the highest finishes in school history.

Hadsell's athletes have won five Runner of the Year awards in cross country, as well as five Athletes of the Year in track and field. Between cross country and track, Hadsell has coached 27 MAC champions and 24 MAC runner-up finishers. On the NCAA level, the Rockets have had 15 All-Region selections, twice as many as any other MAC school over that same period. Two Toledo women have won NCAA Regional track titles a total of three times, with Briana Shook winning the 3000-meter steeplechase in 2002 and 2004 and Ebba Stenbeck winning the regional title in that same event in 2007.

A native of Burlington, VT, Hadsell graduated with a bachelor's degree in education from Vermont in 1993 and later earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from Coastal Carolina in 1997.
