Teaching from tragedy in Seneca Co.

Posted: Updated:

It's been a very difficult road for Ryan Bondy and his family.

In November, his daughter Olivia, 11, was killed in a house fire.  Her mother, step-father and two brothers, Linkin, 6, and Jaxon, 8, also died.

"Obviously we've struggled the last couple of months with everything that has happened," Bondy said.  "But, we were able to get ourselves in the position where we can make something positive out of something as devastating as this."

With the help of Seneca East Schools and area fire departments, a fund called Safe Home for Families was created.  The money goes toward fire prevention by making sure every family has a smoke detector.

Thursday night, a $1036 check, on behalf of the Sandusky Ski Club was given to the cause.

"The support that we had has been tremendous," Olivia's step-mom, Billie Bondy said fighting back tears.  "We really appreciate everyone pulling together to help us."

"We had an anonymous donor match the funds so we were able to give the money we raised to both the women's shelter and this," JJ Reese, a ski club member said.

The fund has already been able to provide hundreds of smoke detectors to families.

Jaimie Beamer, the school board president said "every family in the district got one which is 544 families."

Now the hope is to reach out even more.  Something Bondy says would make Olivia proud.

"She thought more about how other people would feel than herself," he said.

There are already plans in the works to get awareness out to more people in the community.
