Timeline for an icy evening

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, Ohio -

Warm air with plenty of moisture is surging over northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan, but cold air lingers near the ground.  The end result will be several hours of sleet and freezing rain, late this evening and into the early part of the overnight, across the region.

Winter Weather Advisories are in effect near and east of I-75, with a Freezing Rain Advisory in effect to the west of I-75, for the evening and pre-dawn hours.

Here is what we expect:

6 PM - 8 PM:  Light snow will overspread the area, mixed with a limited amount of sleet in some areas.

8 PM - 11 PM:  Snow will give way to sleet and freezing rain from SW to NE across the 13abc viewing area.  Temperatures will hover a few degrees below freezing.  Paved surfaces will become very slippery, and sidewalks will be dangerous.  0.10" of ice will accumulate in some areas.  Total snowfall will be a dusting to an inch.

11 PM - 3 AM:  Temperatures will gradually climb above freezing, from the southwest to northeast, across the area.  Places like Ottawa, Findlay and Upper Sandusky should climb above freezing first, with Monroe likely the last part of our area to climb above freezing.  As temperatures rise above 32 degrees, a changeover from freezing rain to rain will occur.

3 AM through the Monday morning commute:  Scattered rain showers will occur as temperatures climb through the middle and eventually upper 30s / lower 40s.  It may take an extra hour or two for some surfaces on the ground to warm above freezing, but by Monday afternoon, we'll climb to 47 degrees.

Beyond tonight's icy mix, a Flood Watch is in effect for most areas west of I-75 through midweek, as additional rain will fall as snow melts.
