Free city-wide text and email alert system

Posted: Updated:

A new text and email alert system is now available for Toledoans. Tuesday city council approved $50,000 for the new safety feature.  Its one more tool to help keep people in our area safe.

"Yes I would sign up for it because it's important to inform the community about the safety of the neighborhoods and things like that. So people can be safe when they leave the house and safe when the come home," said Toledoan Pamela Knewell. @

"Yeah but there might be more pressing issues right now like the crime rate and the roads right now," said Toledoan Tony Kolodzaiku.

City council approved funding for a new text and email alert system to help fight crime and make neighborhoods a little safer. The alert system is called Eye Citizen. Councilman Tom Waniewski came up with the idea. They first tested it in the Old Orchard neighborhood .

"We have to tweak a couple of things make it a little more real time. We want to reduce the boundaries," said councilman Tom Waniewski.

The text or email alerts are at this point based off of crime in the area of Bancroft, Secor, Monroe, and Douglas. Residents only get a text alert for crimes like burglaries, shootings, thefts or break-ins. If you would like to receive text alerts log onto to eyecitizen.org and fill out the information. The councilman says there were some concerns about the alert system.

"A burglar can register and then determine if they've picked up on him. Well my answer to that is you can get a police radio app on your cell phone right now and listen to police scanner any time and if your breaking into the police and we have your cell phone that's a bonus for solving the crime"

Solving a crime and keeping residents informed on what's happening in their neighborhood

"Now crime is so high now you don't know what's going on in your neighborhood so getting a text will let you know more about what's going on in your neighborhood," said Knewell.
