Early in the morning around 2:20am last Saturday, another wrong-way driver hit the highway, but this time a local hero was in the right spot at the right time. ODOT driver George Seambos said, "Scary! I mean you hear about this all the time. I never thought I would experience it myself. I was on routine snow and ice patrol heading toward the Michigan line and I noticed headlights coming at me."
Without hesitation George se ambos turned on his flashers, pulled his snow plow truck sideways and blocked the oncoming traffic from the wrong way driver. The wrong way driver drove off, but Seambos caught up with him again and made another call to 911. Seambos followed the driver at a nearby exit.
Seambos said, "Then I noticed the car next to me sitting at the traffic light. I looked over at him and he looked confused and I definitely knew something was wrong at that time." When the light turned green the car didn't move. So Seambos took advantage by blocking his car, then he jumped out and took away the man's keys.
Seambos said, "There were also vehicles coming from behind. I knew if they got around me something bad would of happened. So that is why I put my truck sideways to keep people a safe distance away." A few minutes later, police showed up and the man was arrested for operating a vehicle impaired.
Seambos is hoping more people will be responsible before jumping in a vehicle. Seambos said, "The Super Bowl is coming up this week, just try to keep designated drivers in mind and don't drink and drive this weekend."
