BOWLING GREEN - The Bowling Green State University indoor track and field team made strides at the Akron Invitational Friday and Saturday as the Falcons look towards the Mid-American Conference Championships.
"We took positive steps this weekend, particularly in the 4x400 with us only being a second off of the school record," Head Coach Lou Snelling said. "It was also nice to see progress in the 60, 200, 400 and weight throw. But we have a lot of work to do next weekend if we are to qualify and send an adequate team to the MAC Indoor Championships."
Next weekend is the team's final opportunity to compete before the MAC Championships Feb. 22-23 as the squad will take part in the Grand Valley State Big Meet.
The most impressive performance came in the 4x400 relay as Brittany Sinclair, Felicia Jefferson, Demetra Taylor and Allison Weimer ended second with a time of 3:49.24. That race was almost four seconds faster than the squad's best previous time.
Freshman Tiera Parker ran the 60 for the first time in her career and posted Bowling Green's best finish in the event with a time of 7.89 seconds. Berrion Berry, who won the 60 a week ago at the Tom Wright Classic, was next with a time of 7.95.
In the 200, both senior Allison Weimer and freshmen Taylor Rambo set new personal bests to finish third and fourth. Weimer ran a 25.25 and Rambo was just a tick slower at 25.27. Rambo also set a new PR in the 400 with a time of 57.96. She was the second-fastest BGSU runner in the event as Brittany Sinclair ended third in a time of 57.56.
In the weight throw, Brooke Pleger's unbeaten streak was snapped as she finished fifth with a distance of 60-8.50. But Kayla Velasquez set a new personal best behind her with a distance of 53-1.50.
Bowling Green will compete in the GVSU Big Meet Friday and Saturday in Allendale, Mich.
