Rossford schools to close Indian Hills elementary

Posted: Updated:

Changes are in the works for Rossford Schools.  Tuesday night, the school board voted to implement a reconfiguration plan that includes closing Indian Hills Elementary.

School board president Dawn Burks says, "we will then move our pre-K through second grade to Glenwood, then move our third through fifth graders to Eagle Point, and our sixth graders will move up to the Junior High."

School leaders say it will help cut costs.  It also gives teachers an opportunity to work together, under one roof, to better education.

"I grew up where there was separation of grades and I think its beneficial to the kids," Christie Schimming, mother of 2 said.

Dave Misko, also a parent says, "moving these kids together and collaborating with teachers is an excellent idea."

Misko's kids attend Indian Hills.  He agrees the consolidation will be a good thing, however, he has some major concerns about the buildings safety.

"We're going to put our youngest students in a building that has the greatest needs facility wise," he said.

It's one reason why the board pushed the reconfiguration back to the 2014, 2015 school year.  Board members acknowledge the growing need for renovations or new buildings all together.  Burks says its a long term goal already in the works.

"We're in phase two of the process, and hopefully by May we'll have some decision made going into phase three," Burks told 13abc.

In the meantime, parents are urging board members to be thorough.

"Get your ducks in a row, have a sound plan, put it on paper, and then go back to the people." Misko said.

Once the district reaches phase three of that process, it will be time to talk about a possible levy or grant money to get construction started.
