Marchers protest BGSU plan to cut 100 faculty positions

Posted: Updated:

A group of professors, students, and alumni at Bowling Green State University marched on campus Wednesday to protest a plan to cut 100 faculty positions for the fall.

Last month the university announced the cuts will come from attrition and the expiration of some one-year teaching contracts.

The group of one hundred people marched to the office of BGSU President Mary Ellen Mazy to deliver a petition calling the cuts a mistake.

"The Administration's proposal is not a good one and disrespectful of the faculty who are working here," says Errol Lam, a retired BGSU faculty member.

"This devalues my degree, it erodes the quality of our education," says Michael Hart, BGSU sophomore.

"That is a mistake that BGSU must not make," says David Jackson, President of the BGSU Faculty Association.

"We will be losing somewhere between 500 and 800 classes to be taught next year," says Jackson. "That means that the classes that we still have will have more students in them, there will be fewer classes, and then classes that students need to graduate may not be offered as frequently."

The protestors delivered a petition with more than five thousand signatures to the BGSU President's office.

University administrators are not commenting on Wednesday's march.  However, BGSU leaders said the university must evolve to meet the changing needs of students and assures students the cuts will not have an impact on the quality of education.

The BGSU Faculty Association is in contract negotiations with BGSU Administration.

BGSU isn't commenting on the status of the talks, but Jackson says he hopes to have the contract wrapped up by the end of the semester.
