Late Run Propels Lourdes by Marygrove for Win #20

Posted: Updated:

SYLVANIA - Trailing by one with 12 minutes to play, Lourdes went on a 15-0 run over the next nine minutes on the way to a 71-56 victory over Marygrove on Saturday afternoon at Tam-o-Shanter, running the Gray Wolves' winning streak to a school-record seven straight games.

With the victory Lourdes has now won 20 games on the season for the first time in school history.

"As a team at the collegiate level, 20 wins is one of the benchmarks that you strive for," head coach Andre Smith said after the victory.  "For our program to get to that level in just our third year is a credit to our kids."

Alex Davis (Cleveland, Ohio/Nordonia H.S.) scored a game-high 24 points while Dorel Sutherland (Toronto, Ont./Ascension H.S.) added 10 more for the Gray Wolves.

Lourdes jumped out to a 24-12 lead with six minutes to play in the first half following a 9-0 run.  The Gray Wolves would maintain the advantage, heading into the locker room with a 34-25 lead.

Marygrove came out the second half and immediately cut into the lead.  An 11-0 spurt over two minutes put the Mustangs ahead for the first time on the afternoon, 42-40.  The game stayed tight until the final 12 minutes when Lourdes went on its 15-0 spurt.  Corey Harvey (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson H.S.) scored six of his nine points during the stretch, which allowed the Gray Wolves to earn the victory.

"We're not where we should be mentally at this point in the season," Smith added.  "We need leaders to step up if we want to take the next step."

Jordan Al tallied a double-double for Marygrove (3-25, 3-17 WHAC) with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Diante Taylor also scored 13 points.

With the victory Lourdes remains in second place in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, one game behind Davenport heading into the final weekend of the season.  The Gray Wolves will return to action on Wednesday evening, traveling to Lima, Ohio to face Northwestern Ohio.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.

"We're going to have to put in a good week of practice this week to get ready for UNOH," Smith concluded.  "They will be a tough test for us, especially playing at their place."
