We're following breaking news this morning out of the Vatican.Pope Benedict XVI is resigning at the end of the month. The Pope told Cardinals of the Catholic Church that he is stepping down because of advanced age. Benedict is 85 and will turn 86 on April 16. He was elected Pope in 2005.
Pope Benedict XVI has resigned after seven years. The pope's announcement Monday morning came as a surprise to many in the Catholic community.
At Sisters of St. Francis in Toledo the general response is shock, but Sister Mary Jon Wagner says she think the announcement shows great leadership from Pope Benedict by recognizing he could no longer due the job because of his health.
Sister Wagner got the news of the pope's resignation early Monday morning. This week begins the Lenten season, and, with the pope expected to step down at the end of the month, a new pope will be appointed before Easter.
It's a big shakeup to the Catholic Church, but Sister Wagner says she is confident someone else can take over the role and lead Catholics across the world.
