The National Retail Federation estimates Americans will spend $18.6 billion this year on Valentine's Day. Just hours before the big day local businesses are preparing for a big rush.
Monroe County Flowers, is an Internet based flower company based in Ida Township. Dave Staelgrave grew up in a family of florists and now he spends his days working away in his garage that's now converted to his workshop.
Staelgrave says Valentine's day sales come in right behind Mother's day but he plans on making and hand delivering at least 150 bouquets in the next 24 hours.
"I'll be working through the night and you plan on that, that's why I'll be wearing flip flops because at 3am I'll be here making arrangements," says Staelgrave.
On Valentine's day the local business is recruiting family members to help with deliveries.
For the sweet tooth, Maumee Valley Chocolate and Candy is cranking out chocolate covered strawberries nonstop. They consider Valentine's day to be the biggest business day of the year.
"It's a huge money maker for us we anticipate doing the same amount of December business in three days, it gets chaotic," says owner Jason Sieminski.
If you are looking to save some green on dinner- call ahead many restaurants are offering special deals. Another option swooning your sweetie with a heart shaped pizza. It's a top seller at The Original Gino's Pizza, ranking Valentine's day in the top five for pizza business.
So whether you show your love with food or flowers, local businesses are ready and waiting for some last minute love.
