UT police waiting on DNA in death investigation

Posted: Updated:

We're still asking what exactly happened when two University of Toledo students were found stabbed outside a dorm. One student died, and another student was left fighting for his life. Investigators say it was an isolated incident.

Was it murder or self defense? That's what UT and Toledo police want to know after an altercation in December between two male students turned deadly.

Police found 19-year-old Erik Littleton in the street with nine stab wounds outside the International house on campus.

His friend, 20-year-old Josiah Galat, was found in the back of the dorm. Galat died.

"We submitted some of the DNA evidence for analysis and we're awaiting some of those critical reports to kind of piece together what occurred," says UT police chief Jeff Newton.

UT's police chief believes the autopsy report, toxicology and DNA reports will tell the story of what caused the students, who were friends and roommates, to get into a fight.

"There's a variety of things that could have happened in that stairwell between the two individuals. We're keeping an open mind and we're going to look at the evidence and see what it says," says the chief.

Erik Littleton is recovering from the brutal stabbing. The chief says Littleton is cooperating with detectives. The International House also has cameras.

"We were able to track their comings and goings via those camera's so they have been helpful in the investigation," says Chief Newton.

The chief says the students have no criminal records and weren't problem students. He says once the DNA evidence returns detectives will meet with the prosecutor to determine if any charges should be filed in the case.
